Shanxi News Network (Reporter: Yuan Zhaohong). “The river is surging forward on the 500 m wide course, which is just like thousands of soldiers and horses forging ahead and rushing to the cliffs. It’s amazing! It’s definitely worth it!” said Meng Guoyu, a reporter from Shanxi Economic Daily. As the 5th Tourism Development Conference of Shanxi Province was held on May 27, Sanjin interview group of traveling all around in Shanxi Province and all media visit Hukou Waterfall. The sight of torrential Yellow River rushing down impressed everyone deeply.
The Hukou Waterfall in Shanxi Province is the world’s largest yellow waterfalls, where the Yellow River converges at here from 400 m wide to 50 m. The river bed here is like a huge pot, collecting the rushing Yellow River. Therefore, the waterfall is called Hukou (pot spout). Hui Shiyang, a person in Ming Dynasty, said “Originated from Kunlun Mountain, waves on waves, mighty river formed then; Rounded Jade Gate, twists and turns, the pot is what it’s collected by” , which is a vivid portrayal of this scene at Hukou.
The Hukou Waterfall is extremely spectacular, with its yellow water pouring down, surging torrents, muddy waves rushing forward, water splashed and mist haunted. Its howling waves are just like the of thousands of roaring soldiers and galloping horses, which could be heard even from tens of away. With this magnificent scene, the waterfall is know as “How could you know the Yellow River if you have never seen Hukou Waterfall?”.
It is said that the scenery of Hukou varies in four seasons. In winter, the river is less torrential and freezes. In spring, it is howling and roaring, which is thunder-like. In mid-summer, the water level raises and it’s dangerously torrential, which is quite spectacular. In autumn, it is surging forward with great momentum, and you could see rainbows over the river.
The reporter group visited Hukou Waterfall right in the summer, when they could see the torrential water surging forward, howling in the valley. It’s just like thousands of soldiers and horses fighting their battles, roaring and howling. Rushing down from the top to the bottom makes great noises, echoing everywhere. The torrential river keeps hitting against rocks and cliffs, making sounds just like drum beats that echoed in the valley, which could even be heard from tens of miles away. This is the wonder in this tourism area, called “thunder in the air”.
In addition, you can also have a look at beautiful sceneries: mist ascended from the water and rainbows reaching out from the river. At the “pot spout” of the Yellow River, the water mist aroused by the torrential turbulences pouring down to the bottom and hitting against cliffs and river surface, which is just like clouds or smokes rising from the underwater, and you could see this view even from multiple miles away. Rainbows are formed, which is resulted from the interaction between splashed water and sunlight. When the river pours down and hits the bottom, the mist is aroused, which refracts the sunlight and forms rainbows. Sometimes the rainbow seems to be a bridge from the sky to the water, like a Chinese dragon bending its head to drink the water; sometimes a straight rainbow is formed over the river, like a ribbon crossing over; sometimes the rainbow is scattered in the water mist, like colorful flowering blooming in the clusters, which is bizarre and eye-dazzling and for which it is also honored as one of the wonders here.
In the Hukou Waterfall Tourism Area, tourists everywhere hum the song, “The Yellow River is roaring, the Yellow River is roaring...”. Amazed by the magnificent scene, it has already been beyond words.
