Located on the east bank of the Hukou Waterfall, Longwangchan was an important ancient crossing on the Yellow River. Hundreds of stone caves and three old streets are still visible. Historically, all boats upstream had to disembark from here, unload their cargoes through the maids and travel on dry land to go around the Hukou Waterfall before they could enter the downstream and continue their voyage. According to historical records, a prosperous commercial market town was formed as far back as the Ming Dynasty, with 63 shops and more than 500 holes at its peak, and more than 1,000 boats moored here a day, with thousands of sails and masts bustling about and a lot of traffic. Its prosperity continued until the 1950s when it gradually declined for over 400 years.
