In 1936, when the survival of the Chinese nation was at stake, the Chinese Communist Party led the Chinese Workers' and Peasants' Red Army to cross the Yellow River to the north to fight against Japan, sowing the seeds in Shanxi Province and becoming an extremely important milestone for the Chinese Revolution towards victory. During the War of Resistance against Japan, the famous modern poet Guang Wei Ran and the composer Xian Xinghai were at the shore of the Hukou, seeing the raging waters of the Yellow River, seeing the boatmen battling with the fierce wind and waves, hearing the melody of the high-pitched and melodious boatmen's horn, and imagining the great rivers and mountains of the Chinese nation being trampled by the Japanese iron hooves. With high passion and boiling blood, he wrote an epic poem of Chinese music, that is, the Yellow River Cantata. The epic shows the strong and unyielding spirit of the Chinese people and their power to fight back.

After the founding of New China, the piano concerto "Yellow River", which is based on the "Yellow River Cantata", traces the long history of the Chinese nation with its unique melody, and eulogizes the kind and industrious people living on the banks of the Yellow River, a rich land with an epic structure, magnificent techniques, rich layers and a magnificent mood, so that the melody of the piece penetrates the hearts of people and inspires generations of Chinese people to strive for progress.
