Yangko in Taidu Village, Tunli Town, Ji County

Yangko in Taidu village, Tunli town, Ji county, is a traditional and unique folk dance art in various forms, which has been passed down in Tunli Town, Ji County and inherited over a hundred years.

Taidu Yangko is said to have been formed through the merging, creation and composition of Yangko in Hui County, Henan Province, and the folk art of Ji County, from two families of Hou and Li in Hui County, Henan Province, who fled to settle here. There are two forms of Taidu Yangko: one is Diyangko, and the other is a stilt that integrates music, dance and skills into one. The Yangko team generally is composed of more than ten to one hundred people. There is a pivotal singer in the Yangko team. He shakes the ring in his left hand and holds a colorful umbrella in his right hand that is commonly called the umbrella head. He is the leader of the Yangko team. His main duty is to direct the overall situation, compose programs, and lead the Yangko team to line the streets, walk around the yard, and drag out from the gathering place, improvise and sang Yangko on behalf of the Yangko team for gratitude. Over thousands of years, on every Lantern Festival, men, women and children in Taidu Village wear red and green Yangko costumes, make up with powder on their cheeks, dress up characters, twist colorful fans or pick flower baskets, enjoy twisting and dancing in the streets and alleys, accompanied by gongs, drums and suona horns. The movements are lively and exaggerated, creating a joyful and warm atmosphere of traditional festivals.

As a regional folk dance, Taidu Yangko has integrated the lives of local people. Through public participation and humorous performances, it expresses the people’s wishes for a better life and conveys an optimistic spirit.
