Yellow River Cantata
On the occasion when it was critical for the survival of the Chinese nation in 1936, the Chinese Communist Party led the Red Army of Chinese Workers and Peasants to cross the Yellow River in the east, travel north to resist Japan, and plant kindling in Shanxi Province, which became an extremely important milestone in the Chinese revolution towards victory. During the War of Resistance Against Japan, the famous modern Chinese poet Guang Weiran and composer Xian Xinghai saw the turbulent Yellow River water, saw the boatmen fighting against the violent waves, and heard the sonorous and melodious rhythm of the boatman’s horns. Thinking that great rivers and mountains of the Chinese nation being trampled by the Japanese iron hoof, they composed the Chinese national music epic, that is, "Yellow River Cantata" with passion and warm blood. The epic reveals the unyielding fighting spirit of the Chinese people and expresses the fighting power of the Chinese people to rise up and resist.
After the founding of the People’s Republic of China, the piano concerto "Yellow River", adapted from the "Yellow River Cantata", traces the long history of the Chinese nation with a unique melody. It eulogizes the kind and industrious people who work and live on the rich land on both sides of the Yellow River with epic-structure, gorgeous techniques, rich hierarchic and magnificent artistic conception, making the melody of the song deeply rooted in the hearts of the people, and inspiring generations of Chinese to work hard.
